Conspirare

One of my favorite choirs is Conspirare, the professional chamber choir based in Austin, Texas, conducted by Craig Hella Johnson. I first heard them at the ACDA National Conference in New York City in 2003, and now own several of their CDs.

Their live DVD (also available as a CD), A Company of Voices, is an extraordinary demonstration of varied programming (Morten Lauridsen-Carly Simon-Moses Hogan-Dolly Parton-Samuel Barber-Eric Whitacre-Annie Lennox, and my favorite: "When I Fall in Love" merged with "Nearer, My God, to Thee"); imaginative (and numerous) choir formations; and most importantly, exquisite singing.

Below is a sampler of several tracks from the DVD. The last line of text in this video clip is "There must be another way." Craig Hella Johnson has certainly found many new, fresh and exciting ways to present choral music to today's audiences.

You can view more clips here. Highly recommended.
